Why is my student loan payment $0/month?

Updated this week

If your account shows a $0 monthly payment, don’t worry—this can happen under federal repayment programs like IDR (Income-Driven Repayment).

Here’s what it means:

  • Based on your income and household details (like family size, location, or marital status), the government doesn’t expect you to pay anything right now.

  • A $0 payment still counts as an active repayment. You’re in good standing, and your progress toward forgiveness continues as long as you stay enrolled.

  • You’ll need to submit your application to ensure you’re officially approved for a $0/month plan. Without submitting, the plan won’t go into effect.

  • Each year, you’ll recertify your income. If your situation changes, your payment may adjust too.

  • These plans are designed to match your financial situation—and for lower-income borrowers, that can mean $0/month.
